Employee Spotlight on Karl Cadonic

This month’s blog post is part of our A Day in the Life series. As part of this series, we will introduce you to a new member of the DPM team and give you an inside look at a typical day for them!

For this month we interviewed Karl Cadonic who is one of our Design Supervisors at DPM to shed light on what a typical day looks like for him.

Get to know Karl!

  1. What is your role at DPM?

I’m a Design Supervisor

  1. How long have you been working at DPM?

A little over 3 years now

  1. How did you get into your field of work?

My Grandfather was an electrician, and I grew up around him tinkering at our cottage which really sparked my interest in technology from a young age.

Questions:

  1. Is there such thing as a typical day for you? If so what is it like?

Answer: I wouldn’t say there’s a typical day, as every day comes with new challenges to tackle! However, some common waypoints in my day would be sitting down at my desk at 7:30 to start the day and prep for my morning huddles during the 8:00 hour. This is typically followed by design reviews and coordination calls with clients and external stakeholders until I break for lunch around 12:30/1:00. In the afternoon I’ll circle back with my team of designers between any other calls or meetings I might have scheduled for the afternoon before ending my day around 4:30/5:00.

  1. What is something you enjoy most about your role?

Answer: Definitely finding unique solutions to design issues when they present themselves! I’ve always loved puzzles and like to face each one as a new challenge.

  1. What are some of the most challenging aspects of your role?

Answer: I think the most challenging aspect I deal with so far is negotiating between the Project Management group and my Designers – making sure everyone is aware and has input on project schedules is key to ensuring their success.

  1. What has been a career highlight for you?

Answer: Something that has been incredibly enlightening and exciting for me to be a part of has been working on the Streetlight, Hydro Relocation and OTC Packages for the Finch West LRT. It’s the kind of project that touches every aspect of our business and provides a comprehensive view into the intricacies of public utility work as part of larger infrastructure projects.

  1. When you’re not at the office what are you in doing in your spare time?

Answer: Probably catching up on some of my favourite TV shows or tinkering with one of my many little projects around the house – I play video games to unwind occasionally as well.

  1. Why choose DPM? What sets it apart from other companies?

Answer: The corporate culture here is something that I feel really draws people in and creates a welcoming atmosphere. We know how to band together as a team to get projects done, but also know how to celebrate and party as well!

  1. What are some of your favourite projects to work on?

Answer: I love to work on projects that serve or can affect the public at large, feeling that I contribute to my community in a positive, impactful way is important to me.

  1. What is something that motivates you each day?

Answer: Knowing that there are others counting on me every day, whether that’s family, coworkers, or clients to do the best work I can every day! Also, having my dog Morty around never fails to lighten the mood, haha!

A big thank you to Karl for sharing a day in his life with us! Hopefully, you got to know Karl and his role a little better. We are so happy to have him on our team.
